HELLO ANGELZ

Charlys Angelz is a club night that started in Ibiza a couple of years ago and has proved hugely popular. Its run by girls and boasts and all girl line-up, and two key players are heading to Australia to head a lineup that includes a few of our local lads. 3D said hello to the UK's Vicky Devine and Eve Carey.

How did you get into DJ'ing? Did it take alot of persistance or was it a pretty easy scene to break into? Vicky Devine - I have worked within the music scene for quite a while now. Initially as a club reviewer and then as a dancer before eventually becoming a DJ. I'd messed around on my friends' decks for quite a few years before realising it was something I wanted to do full time and was encouraged to do so by my friends and family. But yeah, its a tough old scene and you have to have thick skin and buckets of perserverance along with some good friends and some luck too!

Eve Carey - I worked in a small studio when i was 17, they had decks and I started to learn how to DJ. I just carried on from there. lots of dedication and practice which is now paying off!!!

Why do you think there are more male DJ's than female?

EC: I think DJ'ing was never really a career option for women. we were never taken seriously, but now the "tables have turned!"

There are plenty of rough looking guy DJ's around, but I think I've yet to see a female DJ that isn't a babe? Whats with that? VD: Why thankyou!!! I think its just down to the fact that the music industry is centred around sellable packages and so the girls that are involved just do as much as they can to make the best of what they have and therefore make themselves more sellable!!!! At the end of the day i think you have to use as many assets as you can within limits to make a success of yourself within the music industry. Ultimately though this will only get you so far - you can't flannel your way through on image alone and I'm sure any female artist would agree when I say that the goal is to be respected and liked for your ability.

Tell us about the Charlys Angelz night. Why have a seperate night for an all feamle lineup?

VD: As you have so rightly pointed out, there are relatively few female DJs, but we just thought it would be really cool to showcase the best of these at an event

EC: Its a really good promotional idea from Flipside DJ Agency - GIRL POWER!

What Styles of music do you play. How has your style developed since starting?

VD: My main style is trance, but because of playing in Ibiza for the past three years, I also play alot of funky stuff too. This initially was due to the fact that i had to play funky to warm up for bigger DJs, but I really love playing this style in addition to trance. I usually try and incorporate a bit of everything into my sets whether it be funky or trance - a few anthems, a couple of oldies and a few that I have just got that week, and I think I have just become more confident with this as time goes on.

EC: I play house - funky and chunky house - loads of basslines and fat beats!!

What are your impressions of the Australian dance scene?

VD: Fresh and Vibrant. As I said before I had the best time when I played in Australia last time, and am so excited to be back. i also went to some of the most amazing nights in Sydney and heard some fantastic DJs out here - some of whom I know are really breaking it on the international scene which is wicked to see.

EC: Will let you know when I get there!

Can you give us a couple of current tracks thats sum up the vibe of your sets?

VD - In the trance bag - an Italian track called Loophole on Mazeman and Music Non stop by DJ Wag on Overdose - both are absolute belters

EC - Full Intention - Forever, Shapeshifters - Lola-s Theme, Egyptian Empire - The Horn Track 2004

Catch Vicky and Eve at Charlys Angelz at Bohem on Friday February 20th
